KARAIKUDI HOUSE
This traditional holiday residence in Kallal, near Karaikudi, draws inspiration from the region’s architectural heritage while seamlessly integrating modern sensibilities. Designed as a 3BHK residence, the spatial planning orbits around a central courtyard, a hallmark of Chettinad homes, here reinterpreted with an automated retractable glass roof that merges tradition with innovation.
The entrance is marked by a grand wooden double door with intricate carvings and brass inlays, leading into a foyer framed by twin carved pillars. The living area showcases traditional furniture ensembles—a diwan, swing, and classic sofa—set against a backdrop of corniced ceilings with golden floral wallpaper on honey-beige tones, enhancing warmth and opulence.
The courtyard, anchored by four ornate wooden pillars and patterned flooring, visually connects to the dining zone, where a Pichwai-themed wallpapered feature wall forms the backdrop for a traditional dining set beneath a chandelier. A concealed door discreetly leads to the powder room, preserving visual harmony.
The pooja room is articulated with brass-accented double doors and a restrained aesthetic, exuding reverence and simplicity. Each bedroom is individualized with distinct wallpaper treatments, while wardrobes carry finely detailed wooden craftsmanship, maintaining design continuity. Cornices run throughout, tying together spaces with architectural rhythm.
The residence embodies a fusion of Karaikudi’s timeless traditional vocabulary and contemporary living comforts, resulting in a space that is both nostalgic and forward-looking.
